The tools in your account
Every licensed operator we list is required to provide these, and all of them work. The difficulty is not availability — it is that the moment you would most benefit from a limit is the moment you are least likely to set one. Set them on the day you register.
Deposit limits
A daily, weekly or monthly cap on what you can pay in. The most effective single control available, because it acts before a decision rather than after it. Increases usually take effect only after a cooling-off period; decreases take effect immediately. That asymmetry is deliberate and it is on your side.
Loss and session limits
A ceiling on net losses over a period, or on how long a single session can run. Session limits are particularly useful on mobile, where play tends to fill time rather than occupy it.
Reality checks
A periodic interruption showing how long you have been playing and what your net position is. Simple, easily dismissed, and genuinely effective — most harmful sessions involve losing track of both numbers.
Cooling-off
A short lock on the account, typically 24 hours to a few weeks. Intended for a break rather than a stop, and the right tool when a session has gone badly and you can feel the urge to recover it.
Self-exclusion
A long or permanent closure. It cannot be reversed on request during the exclusion period, which is the entire point. If you are considering it, that consideration is itself good evidence that it is the right decision.
Signs worth taking seriously
None of these are diagnostic on their own. Several together are worth acting on.
- Playing to win back losses rather than for entertainment.
- Depositing more than you planned, or more often than you planned.
- Gambling with money set aside for something else — rent, groceries, school fees, debt.
- Borrowing to gamble, or selling things to fund it.
- Hiding the extent of your play from people close to you.
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
- Playing longer than intended, repeatedly, despite deciding otherwise.
Facts worth holding on to
Every game has a house edge. It is built into the mathematics of the game itself, it applies to every spin and every hand, and no pattern of play changes it. Over enough play the expected outcome is a loss. That is not a warning about bad luck — it is the design.
Results are independent. A slot has no memory. It is not "due". A long losing run changes nothing about the next spin, and the belief that it does is the single most expensive idea in gambling.
Chasing losses reliably deepens them. Increasing stakes to recover is the mechanism by which a manageable loss becomes an unmanageable one. If you notice yourself doing it, stop the session — the urge passes and the balance does not come back.
If someone else's gambling is affecting you
The 0800 006 008 helpline supports family members as well as players, at no cost. You do not need the person's permission or involvement to call, and you do not need to have decided what you want to do about it.
Under 18
Online gambling in South Africa is restricted to adults aged 18 and over. Every operator we list verifies age and identity before releasing funds. If you are under 18, nothing on this site is for you.
